About Merced County

Named after the Merced River, Merced County was formed between 1841 and 1844 when California was still a providence of Mexico. Home to rich and fertile soils, paired with a consistent mild climate, this county had relied on agriculture as its main source of business and employment. However, employment opportunities are diversifying as population growth as well as tourism have become an intricate part of this Central Valley county. Attractions like the historic Castle Air Museum and Yosemite National Park call Merced County home, and the areas preserved wetlands all attract thousands of curious minds each year. This county's population growth can be attributed to a variety of things, including the classic beauty of California and the fact that amenities offered to residents have immensely improved over recent years. Options for education have increased for all ages. There are excellent K-12 schools, a modern community college, and University of California, Merced which was the first research university built in the U.S. in the 21st century. Merced County is home to many great festivals and events like the Merced County Spring Fair and the Los Banos May Day Parade. Transportation between cities like the county's seat Merced, Los Banos, and Atwater is made easy thanks to the county's transportation infrastructure.
