They built the Clipper Mill, named in honor of their relative Donald C. McKay, the renowned builder of famous American clipper ships. The land held one of the heaviest stands of sugar pine in the region. The McKays harvested more than 15 million board feet of premium lumber, 70% of which was sugar pine, making them the largest lumber producers in the county at the time. They even constructed their own railroad to haul massive logs (some measuring up to 11 feet in girth) from the deep woods to the mill. The operation ran successfully for over 18 years before closing in 1904 after the timber was exhausted. The spirit of that pioneering era lives on in every acre of this area.
