Barstow is located in San Bernardino County in the Mojave Desert along the 15 freeway. The property is east of Fort Irwin Rd, south of the entrance to Fort Irwin, and 18 miles northeast of Barstow. Barstow is a major transportation center for the Inland Empire. Four large routes intersect in the city including the I-15 and I-40, and Highway 58. Old Route 66 also intersects with this historic city. Barstow is also home to Fort Irwin, part of the US Army Forces Command, and home to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, the largest freight railroad in North America, also has a large rail classification yard and a major maintenance hub for California located in the city. Nearly all of the trains leaving or arriving in California pass through the rail yard. Most travelers know Barstow as exactly halfway from Los Angeles on their way to Las Vegas. Many travelers stop in at the famous Barstow Station. Barstow station opened in 1975, is open 365 days a year, and serves 20,000 tour buses per year.
